Volunteers of all ages work together to keep our senior citizens leading active, useful, happy, interesting, independent lives. Because of volunteers, frail elderly are helped to get the services they need. Because of volunteers, seniors in nursing homes lead quality lives. Because of volunteers, many senior citizens can continue living in their own homes.

Day programs are designed to give home care givers a day off and the participants a day filled with socialization, activity and fun. This organization provides adult day care and respite for elderly, Greenwich residents. Volunteers help with food and recreational activities. A great place for volunteers who enjoy a game of scrabble, checkers or cards.

All kinds of cultural and recreational activities are going on in this active town facility where membership is open to any resident 55 and older. Billiards for ladies, singing groups, knitting, chess, bridge, painting, dancing, field trips, you name it--instructors and helping hands are needed.

A wonderful new residence with 37 one-bedroom apartments provides affordable housing for the well elderly. Volunteers answer phones, organize activities, teach songs, games, crafts and serve meals.

This nonprofit "employment agency" is run by volunteers working in the basement of the Senior Center. This brilliant organization founded in 1977 by Viola Caldwell allows retired seniors to continue working and provides an excellent resource for the community. Volunteers are needed in the office, taking calls, meeting people and helping with the paper work.

A Family Centers program that uses telephone conference calls to bring together people who can’t leave their homes for interesting discussions. Volunteers are needed to be facilitators in these group discussions, and they have lots of fun choosing topics, arranging guest speakers and doing all of this on the phone.

Volunteers in this Family Centers program make calls to elderly, homebound or isolated individuals to give them reassurance, to remind them of medications or to just give them a smile for the day. Volunteers are given helpful training.

Volunteers drive residents over age 60 with no other means of transportation anywhere in town they want to go. Friendly drivers who wish to help homebound seniors take part in the community are always welcome.

Friendly Visitor Program

The Greenwich Department of Social Services trains and matches volunteers and seniors in one-to-one friendships. Volunteers, giving caring support and cheer, regularly visit individuals who might otherwise feel lonely. Volunteers and their senior friends are invited to attend the holiday party and the summer ferryboat picnic.

The transportation service is one of the many superb Red Cross programs. Volunteers, using Red Cross vehicles, provide transportation for Greenwich residents to and from health care and rehabilitation appointments.

This Greenwich Chapter of SeniorNet is a nonprofit organization with the basic goal of teaching seniors to use and to enjoy computers. Classes for seniors, 50 and older, are taught by senior volunteers at the Greenwich Senior Center. Instructors and coaches are needed for basic and advanced classes.

The Mews, located in downtown Greenwich provides reasonably priced rental housing for seniors. Volunteers help with fund raising and with the Merry-Go-Round thrift shop next door to the Mews.

This extremely active group of volunteers, approximately 250 members, provide volunteer services of all sorts. Many superb services are given to elderly, such as help with tax preparation, taking part in the Greenwich Hospital "Red Barons", Call-A-Ride, Meals on Wheels, Nathaniel Witherell, Friendly Connections and other community programs.

The mission of this group is to enhance and enrich the daily living of the 202 residents in our town-owned skilled nursing facility. Volunteers (approximately 150) play many roles here, from escorting residents to recreational or therapeutic activities, to staffing the gift shop, to visiting one-on-one with our residents, and more. This privately owned nursing home with 217 beds and a new assisted living residence of 28 apartments uses volunteers to help in the ice cream parlor, to escort residents to and from activities and to be "friendly visitors". Wednesday and Sunday, volunteers are also needed to escort residents to church.
