Nature |
| Greenwich, known for it natural beauty, has 1,487 acres of wooded public parks and beaches, including two islands in Long Island Sound. Volunteers have for many years actively responded to the challenge of preserving our town’s natural areas–whether they be by land or by water. Audubon Center of Greenwich The Greenwich Audubon was founded in 1942. This always enjoyed nature sanctuary has exciting news--a newly built Audubon Center. Just visit and you will want to stay. If you love nature and sharing this love with others, consider being a docent for the nature education center, a greeter in the new building or a volunteer in the terrific nature store. Volunteers are also needed for general administrative and office help. Friends of Binney Park This grassroots organization advocates and raises funds for the beautification of Binney Park in Old Greenwich. This exceptionally pretty park is pictured on many Greenwich brochures and is often the setting for wedding photos. Volunteering for the Friends gives you a direct voice in the park upkeep and enhancement. Friends of Greenwich Point Greenwich Point was a splendid addition to the town after WWII. This awesome 147 acres of beach and park continues to inspire dedicated volunteers to help with beautification and preservation. Volunteer opportunities range from tree planting and vine cutting, to many other enhancement projects that aim to maintain the natural beauty of Greenwich Point as it is now. Volunteers are also needed to help with the newsletter writing and mailing. There is a small fee to become a member. Greenwich Green & Clean When someone says, "Wow, Greenwich is so beautiful!", tell them about this dedicated group of volunteers, working hard to keep it that way. Founded in 1986, when the town was going through some drastic budget cutting, this group formed and took action. Now working in partnership with the town, they are the inspiration for the pretty flowering baskets along the Avenue and the flowers on many of the traffic islands. Join this group and take part in the fall and spring Town Clean Up. Take a bag, join your neighbors and have fun in this well organized effort to clean our streets and parks. Greenwich Land Trust The Greenwich Land Trust is dedicated to preserving land in its natural state throughout Greenwich. Currently, they maintain 125 properties around town. Volunteers are supported by a small, professional staff who seek gifts of land and work hard to educate the public about the importance of saving open space. The Volunteer Team takes part in a variety of activities, such as walking the properties to check for problems, administrative work and coordinating social events. Join and help in this casual and friendly atmosphere. Volunteers are very welcome. Save the Sound
Many Greenwich volunteers are involved in this superb organization. They care about protecting the Sound now, and they care about saving the Sound for our future generations. There are many ways to help in their efforts, including water quality monitoring, fish trap data collection, legislative support, beach clean-ups and special events. Volunteer educators and advocates are urged to call and get involved. Greenwich Shellfish Commission This nine member commission is in charge of overseeing the shellfish resources of Greenwich. They have successfully reopened the shellfish beds and are working to increase the oyster population. This commission is responsible for enforcing the restrictions on shellfishing, and through the wonderful help of volunteers, they continue to maintain the shellfish resources.
