The title "Professional Volunteer" certainly fits the men and women who volunteer to help our town fire and police departments. Yes, many are volunteers—not paid—for their work, but they are incredibly capable, well-trained, caring people ready to help in emergencies, day and night, in our town. Cedric, a volunteer, sent a recent e-mail, "...may I suggest you include an item about volunteering for the Fire Department in your next Guide. I joined a year ago and have found it to be a really nice way to be a part of our community and to develop skills that I was never aware I had." To become certified as a Volunteer Firefighter in Greenwich, one must be a Greenwich citizen and at least 18 years of age, pass a comprehensive physical exam and complete the 140-hour Firefighter I training course. It takes a big commitment.
