Ask anyone who has volunteered to go with the scouts "winter camping", or helped sell cookies, or taught sports, science, math or crafts to kids, and you are bound to get a lot of stories. Does volunteering with children make a difference in the lives of these youngsters? Does volunteering create a lot of happy memories for the volunteer? The answers are definitely, YES!
Athletic Programs/Coaching: (see SPORTS) 4 Horseneck Lane, 869.3224Office Hours: Monday-Friday 2:00-9:00, Saturday 9:00-2:30; After School Programs: Monday-Thursday 3:00-6:30 and Friday 3:00-5:30 Founded in 1908, this active organization now serves more than 2,000 boys and girls. After school programs of all sorts, athletic and educational, are available for children. If you enjoy helping children reach their full potential, you will be warmly welcomed. The Clubhouse is currently being renovated, and in the new multi-sport complex there will be an indoor ice skating rink. Inc. This social service agency works primarily with families who live in subsidized housing in Greenwich. Many programs are offered to help children. Volunteers are active in after school programs, tutoring, arts and crafts, recreational activities and helping children with homework. Department
of Parks and Recreation Every year the Department of Parks and Recreation holds two special events, which offer fun ways for parents and interested residents to volunteer. Halloween Happenings takes place at the Western Greenwich Civic Center. For over 20 years, this Halloween party (on the Friday before Halloween) attracts over 200 people. Volunteers are needed for decorating, bringing food and handing out prizes and candy. Lunch with Santa is an event that takes place at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center. For over 15 years this very popular, family-oriented Christmas party (on the Saturday after Thanksgiving) has provided entertainment, lunch and fun for over 300 people. Greenwich Council #67, Boy Scouts of America Many Scouts grow up to be volunteer leaders, repeating the Scout Oath and Scout Law and helping to train a new generation of youngsters in citizenship, service and leadership. Our local chapter of this national organization serves boys ages 7-20. Adult volunteers are needed to be Scout and Cub Scout leaders, committee members, district volunteers, merit badge counselors, Learning for Life Career speakers and day camp staff.
Girl Scout
Council of Southwestern Connecticut Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts have a lot of fun and leaders do too. This local chapter of this national organization serves girls in grades K–12 and welcomes volunteer adult leaders. Troops are organized by neighborhoods. All sorts of jobs need to be done, from baking cookies to publicity. If you have a skill or interest you wish to share and an interest in helping girls bring out the best in themselves, there is a volunteer spot for you. Y Adventure Guides This is a wonderful program for fathers and their 5–9 year old children. Activities are based on the Native American theme that emphasizes the importance of family. This program, formerly known as the Indian Guides and Princesses is made up of 10 tribes. Fathers as volunteers are needed as group leaders for outings and camp outs. Greenwich Board
of Education: Parents, as volunteers, are actively involved and extremely helpful in our schools. Parents are encouraged to join the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in their child’s school. Through the PTA, many important school support programs are developed and implemented. Parents are needed to be room "mothers" and to help with special events as well as a myriad of activities. Besides volunteering in the 11 elementary, 3 middle and 1 high school in town, adults can run for the Board of Education. Two members from each party are elected every two years for four-year terms. Volunteers are encouraged to share their special skills and enhance the quality of the programs. YWCA of Greenwich So many wonderful programs are going on at the YWCA. This branch of the national organization uses volunteers in many ways. Adults are welcome to help with the educational programs.
