Greenwich is blessed with cultural institutions that thrive because of volunteer commitment. 698.7447 for Tickets (203) 863-1919 www.actgreenwich.org Founded in 1990, this local amateur theater group, with good acting and good fun, welcomes actors to audition for its annual series of plays performed in the auditorium at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich. Performances are also given at some of the senior citizen residences. Art Society of
Old Greenwich Artists in all media–painters, sculptors and photographers–from all over the Greenwich area are urged to get involved. Over 400 members take part in exhibitions at various Greenwich locations. The annual sidewalk show is fun for artists and the community. Bruce Museum
of Arts and Science Step inside this awesome museum. Visit the galleries and changing exhibits and attend the lectures, workshops and special events and know that these incredible happenings are greatly due to the support, fund raising and help of volunteers. At the Bruce Museum, you will discover a myriad of volunteer opportunities. Be a docent or help in the wonderful museum gift shop. Host at special events or go behind-the-scenes to assist a staff member. In the summertime, head for the beach and help at the Seaside Center (teens love this one). Connecticut Playmakers
This community theater group sponsors three wonderful groups: "Playmakers on Wheels," a touring group that entertains seniors in nursing homes and hospitals; "Sing, Sing, Sing East," a group which presents three sing-along performances a year; and The Young People’s Theater Wing. All of the groups welcome volunteers as actors and singers as well as backstage helpers. Grace Notes, Inc. What joy the Grace Notes bring to our Community! This 17 member women’s a cappella group was founded in 1967. With their acclaimed director, Alexander Constantine, they sing a broad repertoire of popular songs, jazz, folk, and holiday music at senior residences, hospitals and community events. Women in the area are encouraged to audition. Greenwich Art Society This local, nonprofit organization offers art classes, lectures, exhibitions and art scholarships. The group’s home is at the Greenwich Arts Center where classes for adults and workshops for children take place. The Greenwich Art Society Gallery is located in the main, newly renovated, art center. Members also exhibit in venues around town. Local artists are encouraged to join. Greenwich Arts Council This private, nonprofit organization encourages the visual, performing and literary arts in town. With almost 1,000 members, this is a major art resource in Greenwich. The Arts Center headquarters includes the beautifully renovated Bendheim Art Gallery along with other studio and office spaces for local arts professionals and organizations. Volunteers help with the myriad of programs for the arts sponsored by the Arts Council, such as "Art to the Avenue" and other fund raising events. Greenwich Choral
Society Listen and you will know why this group has earned a reputation for excellence in choral music. The 115-voice community chorus welcomes singers to audition for the series of three concerts each year plus a Pops Concert in June. Fund raising and special event volunteers are also needed. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights at Greenwich Academy. Auditions are held in September and January for new singers.
Guild of The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra The Guild supports the Greenwich Symphony. Members of this group are devoted to classical music and the orchestra and they sponsor pre-concert lectures and give great help in fund raising and community involvement. The Guild also gives support to the Young People’s Concerts. Volunteers who love music are greatly welcomed. Melody Men This popular classy choral group of 15 to 20 men, all members of the Retired Men’s Association, entertain at special events and at homes for seniors. Dressed in blue blazers and red neckties, they sing wonderful show tunes and old-time favorites.
The Greenwich Branch of the National League of American PEN Women
www.penwomen.org Members are professional women writers, artists and composers who have been paid for their work in the last five years. Amateurs may also attend PEN meetings as guests. There are four to six meetings a year often with guest speakers. The group exchanges ideas to inspire and encourage creative work. Off Sounders This men’s chorus, of 14 volunteer singers, performs for community organizations and private parties. Rehearsals are Monday nights from September to June. St. Catherine’s
Players A community theater group for children as well as adults with an annual production at St. Catherine of Siena Church Hall in Riverside in February/early March. Church membership is not a prerequisite for auditions. Sound
Beach Community Band A fun, but serious, time is had by all volunteer musicians in this concert band founded in 1955 through the fire department in Old Greenwich (members are not firefighters!). They perform at civic functions in the area including the Memorial Day Parade in Old Greenwich and before the fireworks on Independence Day at Binney Park in Old Greenwich. There are also summer concerts in the park. The 28 members welcome new players at any time.
